13. How to use the LinkedIn and Viadeo business networks

Be coherent: when you are signed up to several networks, dates and job titles must be identical from one profile to the next. Attach value to the most important or recent elements in your career – if you are senior, forget your first items of experience, as they add nothing. Choose the right key words.

Insert links: to your blog, your company, your Twitter account, etc. On LinkedIn, the bloglink application allows you to upload a blog article to your profile.

Emphasise bilingualism or multilingualism: create a profile in English, especially if you are likely to be headhunted by an international company. There are many versions of Viadeo: the more languages you speak, the more profiles you can create.

Build your network: increase your number of contacts to boost your chances of finding a useful contact. Begin by transferring your real network to the web using the option to search your email address books for the people who already use these platforms.
It is worth noting that these networks are effective when you and a potential contact are separated by no more than three intermediaries; if there are more degrees of separation it is a better idea to go direct. If you know somebody well, do not hesitate to ask her for support, without inundating her with requests.

Raise your profile: by joining groups (LinkedIn) or hubs (Viadeo), you can share information and best practices and be contactable by other means than simply your profile, especially if you are a group organiser or regular contributor.

Be active: browse job adverts and think “key words” to make your searches more effective. For example: director - manager - head - marketing - internet - web.

Free or paid-for version? Check that the paid-for option provides added value which will be useful for you. If you use the tool intensively, the paid-for version is almost compulsory (but very affordable: a few pounds a month).

Tip: When looking for a job, APEC gives you the option of linking to your LinkedIn profile. If a job advert interests you, keep an eye on it! A LinkedIn button tells you how many people from your network work for the recruiting company. A new way of being co-opted.
