3. Telephone calls

Initial selection process, making an appointment, job interview, headhunt call, follow-up call: there are so many opportunities for candidates to speak on the telephone. Telephone calls can be a crucial part of the recruitment process. Moreover, recruiters looking to increase efficiency and responsiveness are making increasing use of this type of interview. Candidates must therefore prepare for telephone contact and know the rules instead of neglecting this aspect, as is so often the case.

Approaches to avoid at all costs

  • Answering when it is not a good time to take the call: in the street, poor mobile reception, at work, at home with a crying baby... acceptable when making an appointment but to be avoided in all other cases.

  • Doing things on the fly: make sure you ask the caller to clearly describe the post s/he is calling about.

  • Responding to a question you don’t really understand: don’t hesitate to get recruiters to repeat themselves, and reformulate to check.

  • Mentioning family concerns (I'm looking after the children, I have to take my daughter swimming, etc.).

  • Talking over somebody.

  • Doing too much: I am the ideal candidate, I tick all the boxes for the position.

  • Getting irritated on the phone: you have not been selected, or perhaps you would prefer a face-to-face interview rather than a telephone interview? Keep your cool, there's no reason the recruiter won't have another position to offer you in the future.

Finally, the golden telephone rule: SMILE, you can hear it!
