10. The group interview

They are still quite frequently used to recruit young graduates for sales positions.

We distinguish between the information meeting in which the company and the job are presented or feedback provided from one or more individual interviews, and the group interview proper, in which candidates are selected and eliminated.

The information meeting

Pitfalls and antidotes:

  • Asking questions at any cost: it’s better not to ask any than to be the one who asked if the company provided lunch vouchers or had a works council...

  • Waiting to be the last person in: the recruiter will be getting tired and she will be thinking more clearly at the beginning of the session (the best positions are 3 to 6). By going earlier you will also show her you have no apprehension.

  • Not warning them you have a time limit: you risk causing yourself unnecessary stress if you have a train or another appointment.

The group interview

Pitfalls and antidotes:

  • Getting noticed at any cost: very often, the person who draws the most attention to himself is not the person who gets selected. Your priority is to be yourself, and not to try too hard.

  • Misjudging the effort you put in: the day will be long so make the most of breaks between two interviews. Relax, think of it in terms of a marathon, and try to save some energy and dynamism for the end. Maintain an even pace in your interviews.
