11.The main job hunting tools

  • The must-visit sites: those you need to check regularly.
Corporate-focused: APEC (if you’re an executive), Pôle Emploi
    Generalists: Monster, Cadremploi, Careerbuilder.
    See also: usajobs.gov, jobbankinfo.org, careeronestop.org.

  • Specialist sites: identify the ones which match your aims. For example, for IT technicians: lesjeudis.com ; for market finance : eFinancialCareers, for start-ups and the web: Altaïde.

  • Regional sites: Regionsjob.com and regional newspaper websites (Sud-Ouest, Ouest-France, La voix du Nord).

  • Job advert search engines: A new way of job hunting, these are the Googles of job offers and list more than 200,000 up-to-date adverts: Jobijoba, Jobbydoo, Wanajob, SimplyHired, Indeed.

  • Use CV databases: at APEC, Monster and Cadremploi, and specialist sites.

  • Social networks: LinkedIn and Viadeo, as well as giving you the option of contacting recruiters directly, also offer job adverts (see specific article).

  • Co-option: tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job but do not just send CVs to your contacts. Rather than just applying, use a network approach, contacting professionals who may be able to help you in your hunt, for example by checking that your plans are well founded or by putting you on the right track.

  • Company websites: as well as job adverts, you will also find key figures, information on individual positions and the HR policy. By visiting a company’s website, you will ensure that it matches your expectations.

To make your CV stand out or find the perfect job ad using all these tools: think key words!

Each occupation, and even each company, uses specific terms to describe a position. Whatever your trade, imitate computer specialists who assemble in one paragraph the key words (tags) for their know-how. Two tips though: be careful not to put too many: you risk being approached for a skill area that you have merely dipped into or being too in demand; consider using several terms for your job title (for example: “product manager, marketing manager”, rather than a single term). Finally, when browsing adverts on a job advert search engine, vary the key words you use, test different combinations. This way you will hunt down positions which escape you when you restrict yourself to your usual techniques.
