8. The ten most frequently asked interview questions

By asking these questions, your interviewer concentrates mainly on what you have achieved. In the dialogue with you, she is looking to identify your ability to fill the position on offer and your personality. In her eyes, your experience and facts take precedence over what you think, believe or claim. Be careful not to resort to subjective descriptions (my manager was like this, it’s the market's fault, etc.). Be as factual as possible in your answers.

Taking inspiration from Arthur H. Bell, Professor of Management at the University of San Francisco, this non-exhaustive list will enable you to prepare for the most common questions and to anticipate the recruiter’s intentions when she asks a particular question.

  • How did your results match up to the set targets? Did you help to set the targets?

  • Tell me about the greatest success in your career. Can you give me an example of a setback? What lessons did you learn from it?

  • What did you learn from your last experience? How are you going to put this new knowledge into practice?

  • Any manager must know how to delegate. Describe to me a situation in which you successfully delegated. One in which the delegation was a failure? How did you manage the situation?

  • Give me an example of a situation in which you showed initiative.

  • Which of your previous jobs did you enjoy the most? Why?

  • Why did you leave this job? What attracts you to this new company?

  • Rank interest of the job (contents, responsibilities), career development, salary – why?

  • Why are you interested in the position with our company? Why should we recruit you rather than another candidate?

  • In your opinion, what are your main qualities and areas for improvement? (THE classic question but always interesting.)
