I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a year as a VIE within the Global Equity Flow Sales Team in New York.

Not only did this wonderful experience allow me to apply my "academic" skills into real-life situations and broaden my knowledge in the field of Capital Markets, but also gave me the chance to discover a fascinating American culture and meet wonderful people. I am immensely grateful to all my Société Générale "mentors" who helped me learn new things every day and made my VIE challenging and stimulating, and I am looking forward to pursuing my future career in this field.

I've been working as a VIE for Société Générale sin February 2014. Being a VIE in the Merger and Acquisition department has brought me a very valuable exposure to transactions across different European markets. Throughout my experience as a VIE I had to chance to live cross cultural situations where you learn to manage the impact of cultural differences in your daily working environment. I learned how to take a proactive attitude to solve complicated situations taking into consideration all the different alternatives available before taking the best decision for the team. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone that would like to have an international experience while having the opportunity to develop its personal career.

I discovered the London way of working: intensely busy days, that start early, but also an open-mindedness that offers opportunities for building a broad and vibrant professional network.

Colleagues from all levels in the organisation often get together to relax after work.

Assistant HR Coordination and Communications
I came to do my VIE (international internship) at KB (a Societe Generale subsidiary) in 2013, within a team of six people, all Czech nationals. As soon as I arrived I had to adapt to a new professional environment (working in Czech and English), but also to a very different country and corporate culture. Learning the methodical Czech approach was one of my best experiences.

Living in Prague was extraordinary and I feel very nostalgic at the thought of returning to Paris in the near future.

Nils
Assets/Liabilities Management
The tasks that were assigned to me correspond to the description of the VIE (international internship) position and new responsibilities were gradually given to me. My experience was so rich to me that I decided to extend my internship for another year. These newly acquired skills allowed me to meet the needs of the department and improve my own efficiency.

Luxembourg is a very pleasant city offering all the qualities of a capital (facilities and a wide range of activities) and those of a small provincial town (pleasant environment and ease of transport). It is a vibrant city with many occasions for an evening out, whether to enjoy cultural events or night life, even in winter. A young multicultural population from all over Europe contributes a great deal to this atmosphere. The city's geographical location makes it ideal for visiting neighbouring countries on the weekends. It is interesting to note that the bank is also ideally located in the centre of town and easily accessed by bus.

Since I had already done several international internships, my VIE was an opportunity to continue a career path that is, for me, very enriching on both a professional and personal level.

In Zurich, where the teams are smaller than in Paris or London for example, responsibilities are highly varied, the work is more practical and conditions are more flexible. The living conditions are quite pleasant and the renowned "Swiss quality of life" lives up to its reputation.
Milan
Julien
Project Finance Analyst
My position as a Project Finance Analyst in the Milan team represents an opportunity for learning about structured finance and developing my skills every day while operating within an environment that has a human scale as well as an international dimension.

I would recommend this experience to future candidates for the following reasons:

It offers a chance for:
  • professional training and growth in a management position with many opportunities
  • exchanging ideas and working with professionals with different cultural backgrounds
  • developing one's capacity to adapt to new environments and cultures
  • improving one's English and eventually another foreign language
The positive aspects of my time in Milan are summed up in these four points, in addition to the quality of life the city has to offer.

This experience, within SGBS (a Societe Generale subsidiary), allowed me to enrich my knowledge of the banking sector, while developing my capacity to work in a multicultural team. Thus I learned how to include highly different points of view in my professional approach. This experience also allowed me to pursue my specialisation in emerging economies and offered a more concrete understanding of specific "risks" on the African banking market.

A major hub for Société Générale in Africa, the South African subsidiary combines the advantages of a major group (in terms of means and image) with those of a small company (a tight "family business" type team and a dynamic development-oriented organisation). I was immediately included and involved in my team's activities and I now manage a project portfolio (organisation, regulations, development...) with high added-value for both the subsidiary and Societe Generale. The multiple facets of the environment and the teams strongly contribute to the firm's success stories in South Africa and more generally in Sub-Saharan Africa.

A far cry from the preconceived notions one might have about the country, South Africa represents a stepping stone between Europe and Africa and the ideal starting point for exploring the continent and its cultures. As for Johannesburg, the city increasingly resembles the New York of Africa, whose vitality is only matched by its cosmopolitan atmosphere.

My VIE as part of the SOL Trading team in Asia is a unique experience. Unique because I have learned a lot during these first six months. Before starting my VIE Credit and Hybrid was some vague, theoretical and blur subject that I did not fully understand. Now I am able not only to price a Credit trade but also to understand every step of it, from pricing to booking, and of course risk managing.

Thanks to my teammates, my VIE experience is a success as it gives me a complete first job experience in a field that I happen to love, with everyday tasks I truly enjoy doing among challenging and enthusiastic people. But without the VIE package I wouldn't have been able to catch this type of opportunity : a VIE is a secure way to start your professional experience abroad, and mine at Société Générale is a true success as it has reached beyond my expectations in terms of work experience.
