Investment Banking Associate - Energy Client Coverage
Responsibilities
The Houston based Energy Client Coverage team at (“SG”) is responsible for originating global Investment Banking business with a portfolio of approximately 20 US and Canadian clients involved in the Energy Transition sectors-Power (generation, transmission, distribution) and “New Energy” subsectors (Hydrogen, clean fuels, CCUS, etc), ranging from large publicly traded companies to leading private developers. In addition, on the Oil and Gas side, there are approximately 20 large cap US and international clients, including International Oil Companies, midstream, refining, oilfield service and petchem companies, also involved in the New Energy space.
With offices in ~70 countries, a bulge bracket presence in the Euro capital markets, and an active IB presence in the Americas and Asia/Pacific, and Africa/Middle East, SG has a world class global Energy practice. SG is particularly well known for energy structured finance advisory: Renewables, Transmission, Oil and Gas Midstream, Downstream, Petchem) as well as a broad spectrum of traditional IB products (Global Debt Capital Markets, Global Equity Capital Markets, M & A, [Leveraged] Acquisition Finance, Ratings Advisory, ESG Advisory, FX & Interest Rate Market Risk Advisory, etc.
The IB Associate in the Houston Energy Client Coverage Team supports the senior bankers with the origination and execution of IB transactions, working closely with existing and prospective clients, as well as SG colleagues from the global investment bank. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
- Assist senior coverage bankers in the preparation of pitches, marketing materials, indicative Term Sheets, and attending alongside senior bankers at client or prospect meetings
- Manage internal processes involved in the maintenance of the portfolio and performing certain transaction execution responsibilities in coordination with the IB and Credit teams around the world
- Help run the day-to-day operations so that the group is positioned to exceed its goals and objectives
- Oversee on-boarding of new clients and ongoing monitoring and management of the existing portfolio, including monitoring of covenant compliance, maintenance of internal credit ratings and LGD, Know Your Customer, etc.
- Manage administrative requirements including internal pricing, portfolio and client profitability and exposure positions, etc.
The Associates will be assigned to a variety of projects and are given a broad range of responsibilities, some of which may include:
- Conduct extensive quantitative economic, industry and company research and analysis
- Facilitate and coordinate product group idea generation and solutions development across a broad platform of global capabilities
- Conduct and model a broad range of corporate finance alternatives and due diligence for client transactions
- Financial modeling, valuation, comparable & relative value analyses and market-specific analysis, including peer group analysis
- Assist in financing structuring, underwriting transaction evaluation, preparation, due diligence, and execution
Profile required
- 3-5 years’ experience in the Energy sector preferred, with advanced knowledge of the sector and relevant business products and services
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas and strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of accounting concepts, corporate finance, securities, financial markets, and risk & pricing analysis
- Financial modeling, including experience building three-statement models, including detailed operating builds and capital structure scenarios, accretion / dilution, etc.
- Strong business/commercial credit acumen; understanding of credit documentation, including credit agreements and indentures
- Aptitude to synthesize large amounts of information and develop innovative ideas and/or product solutions
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritize workstreams, and adhere to tight deadlines
