Description of the Business Line or Department
Serving as a legal officer for the Kleinwort Hambros banking and wealth businesses in the United Kingdom (KH).
Based in London, but with travel as appropriate to other KH locations.
Summary of the key purposes of the role
To further the mission of the KH Legal Team: to facilitate the strategic and operational activities of KH, working as a high performing team, delivering legal advice and solutions in an effective, efficient and ethical way, in accordance with the SG Code and KH's resources, risk appetite and tolerance.
Summary of responsibilities
All legal work relating to KH, in collaboration with the wider Kleinwort Hambros and SG legal teams, and as directed by the Head of Legal, KH.
The legal officer should ensure that KH is aware of, and manages, applicable legal risks. In particular, the legal officer shall, subject to the KH Head of Legal and Deputy Head of Legal’s directions:
- commission, prepare, review, negotiate and conclude, legal documentation relevant to KH, including legal opinions, terms of business and other client, intermediary and supplier documentation;
- provide advice and legal documentation regarding new, or changes to, KH products and services;
- provide advice to support the KH Compliance team regarding financial services’ regulatory matters and interaction with regulators;
- advise on financial services’ regulation of the cross-border activities of KH;
- provide advice and legal documentation regarding the deposit taking and credit services of KH;
- provide advice and legal documentation regarding financial intermediaries and business introducers;
- provide advice and legal documentation regarding the wealth planning activities of KH, such as investment, protection and pension products;
- provide advice and legal documentation regarding acquisitions, disposals, reorganisations and other corporate transactions;
- advise regarding the representation of KH in legal proceedings and pre-action activities, and provide advice where requested, in respect of complaints and expressions of dissatisfaction;
- provide training and appropriate infrastructure to facilitate effective legal risk management, including policies and procedures and legal/regulatory horizon scanning;
- manage the use of external law firms and other third party providers, to ensure appropriate assurance and support with minimal cost to KH;
- ensure, in the management of legal risks, compliance by KH with the SG Code and any SG or KH policy or procedural requirements relevant to legal risk management; and
provide, and assist with the provision of, reporting and management information.

- Knowledge of the legal and regulatory risks associated with UK financial services.
- Knowledge of the commercial activities of financial services’ businesses in the UK.
- Strong written skills, including legal drafting.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including providing clear advice for non-lawyers.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including adapting to a diverse range of stakeholders and building in person relationships where required.
- Flexible, positive, solution-oriented and proactive in relation to work requirements.
- A strong ability to assimilate information and willingness to learn and take instructions, including from other lawyers in the team.
