Responsibilities
The Model Validation Specialist will execute the independent review and challenge of models that support the identification and assessment of Financial Crime at client and transaction levels in the Americas Region, which includes, among other jurisdictions, the US, Canada and Brazil as the major hubs. You will work closely with cross functional teams, including business stakeholders, model developers in Compliance, model validators (Paris, Montreal, and NY offices), IT, auditors, and external parties. Presentation of validation analysis to senior management is in the scope of this role. You will be exposed to a variety of Financial Crime models used by the business and support functions, including models for FC Client Rating, Sanctions Screening, AML Transaction Monitoring and Negative News Screening.
The responsibilities of a Model Validation Specialist might include:
- Overseeing multiple independent model validation projects concurrently for Compliance models that are used in SG Americas:
- Defining and presenting the model validation protocol including planning, estimation of resource needs, distribution of tasks, requested documentation, etc. (with the contribution of validation team);
- Organizing the execution on validation activities (e.g. interaction with 1LOD, preparation of announcement letter, organization of kick-off meeting, etc.) and monitoring the progress of the validation activities for each project;
- Reviewing and challenging the model validation work (e.g. analyses, testing), working papers and final report;
- When necessary, conducting detailed analysis/testing of models (e.g. conceptual and theoretical review, independent implementation review, quantifying model risk, etc.);
- Preparing model validation committee materials (Technical Model Committee, Independent Validation Committee) and contribute to the preparation of MRM committees (Operational Committee, MRM Committee, Enterprise Risk Committee, etc.);
- Presenting model review results and providing a recommendation on approval decision to the management and/or to committees
- Managing model review records in shared drive folders and Archer
- When working with external consultants, establish strong ownership of model review conclusions and appropriate review knowledge (e.g. methodology, results, etc.)
- Managing/monitoring a portfolio of Compliance models used in SG Americas on a continuous basis:
- Reviewing Continuous Model Monitoring (CMM) metrics for the Compliance Models, identifying and reporting issues, risks and triggers for review and escalation;
- Tracking model changes (major and minor changes) notified by the Model Owner in the Financial Crime Unit;
- Actively managing model validation recommendations, including organization of recommendation review;
- Managing findings and recommendations raised by Internal Audit or Regulators;
- Interacting closely with the First LoD for continuous identification and monitoring of emerging model risks/issues;
- Contributing to the Annual Model Validation planning;
- Contributing to SG Americas Model Risk Governance topics;
- Creating a body of knowledge of local and global regulatory requirements for model risk and be aware of market environment.
Profile required
- Minimum of a Bachelors Degree (Masters or PhD in a quantitative field preferred);
- 5+ years of experience in Compliance related Models, in the Model Development or Validation;
- 2+ years experience in managing projects;
- Programming skills in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R, C++, SAS, Matlab);
- Knowledge of statistics is required; Notions of machine learning, Artificial Intelligence is desirable;
- Experience in large data management and quantitative analysis;
- Knowledge of model risk management and associated regulatory requirements;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with quant and non-quant staff;
- Team-oriented with a keen sense of ownership and accountability;
- Project and time management skills to work in a multi-tasking working environment;
- Bilingual (English and French) is a plus;
