Description of the Business Line or Department

The Commercial department is responsible for implementation and the development of the Commercial Strategy through intelligent planning, reliable operations, providing a robust governance framework and creating productive relationships with the Private Banking, Wealth Planning and Credit teams.

Due to the variety of different roles within the Commercial team from Sales Management, Marketing, Communications, KYC, Governance, Project management and Resource management. The Commercial team is able to facilitate supporting the Bankers, the Investment team and Wealth Planning when providing a service to our clients.

Summary of the key purposes of the role

The primary purpose of the role is to support the Commercial management team and regional heads of private banking in developing and implementing initiatives that will improve client service, optimise processes and product penetration, grow the asset base, improve profitability and reduce the cost / income ratio.  This role is to be distinct within the commercial team in order to provide a renewed focus on managing the commercial aspects of the business in a time of significant regulatory and operational change.

In order to contribute towards meeting the group financial targets the role holder will need to:

  • Work with the COO, Risk and Finance functions in order improve execution, client experience and highlight MI for strategic decision making

  • Explore innovative solutions and market developments in order to drive new avenues of growth

  • Own aspects of product delivery including pricing and delivery working with colleagues in the Client Solutions Group

Summary of Responsibilities

Commercial Strategy:

  • Support the Commercial management teams and regional heads of private banking to develop a central and regional specific commercial strategy, building on the Kleinwort Hambros value proposition

  • Identify growth opportunities and implement strategies to develop them

  • Utilise and build on data to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities

  • Competitor analysis to help shape the future strategic direction of Private Banking

  • Promote innovative solutions to drive efficiency and simplification while improving the client experience

Product Development

  • Support PBC to co-ordinate production of Commercial offering value proposition (all products & services)

  • Coordination of Product development requirements for commercial – creation of business cases/filter requests from Commercial

  • Support commercial heads in PBC including ongoing pricing/MI/RADAR/Market Data and develop communication plan back to client facing staff

    Change Management

  • Deliver world class Commercial focussed change projects through the project lifecycle

  • Oversees Commercial strategic change projects working with digital and data teams to ensure the optimal client experience

  • Engages with stakeholders, taking into account their levels of influence and interests

  • Leads, empowers and inspires others to deliver successfully towards the KH strategic goals

  • Experience of process improvement techniques and methodologies such a Lean Six Sigma

Client Experience

  • Focus on continued process and operational improvements with client at centre of journey

  • KPIS and detailed cost/ benefit analysis to support business rationale for changes

  • Support with key client deal tracking and management and to act as champion with product providers where needed to maintain SLAs/capture learning points/service improvements and pull into a continuous process/service improvement format to drive customer excellence (similar to reasons lost above)

  • Coordination of Product development requirements for commercial – creation of business cases/filter requests from Commercial

  • Client Service; Structure of teams and book to ensure we balance clients’ needs alongside future potential

  • Monitoring approach to fee management and approach to discounting in addition to competitor analysis for fees

  • Understand the profitability of the business to improve the cost / income ratio and ensure margin is maintained for all clients


  • Operate in a constructive manner with others (within the team, with the management, with other commercial teams, within SG)

  • Work with all KH and SG entities to ensure effective use or resources and cross-learning

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with commercial functions, particularly Wealth Management Solutions, Business Development, Wealth Planning, Finance, Credit and Treasury ensuring that the governance framework supports Private Banking to meet client’s and business objectives.

  • Provide support functions with ideas and feedback to improve efficiencies, governance and client service standards.

  • Drives and coordinates action with all support functions, notably risk & compliance

  • Maintain an appropriate balance between global standards and local rules and practices.

Operational Risk & Regulatory Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures within the business line.

  • Ensure timely intervention when breaches occur and analysis of root causes to avoid repeated issues.

  • Ensure that you take reasonable steps to be fully aware of, understand and comply with all regulatory requirements from all regulatory bodies that are applicable to your business.

  • Perform all duties in accordance with the principles outlined in the SG Code of Conduct, as well as the policies and procedures relevant to your responsibilities, to ensure that you adhere to a culture that treats clients fairly and focuses on the long-term sustainability of client relationships.

Escalate issues to the Commercial Director and local Head of Private Banking

Profile Required


  • Manager competencies as per SG leadership model

  • Degree level education

  • Relevant industry qualifications to support role

  • French (desirable)
