Responsibilities

Description of the Business Line or Department

Within the GLBA/ENV department, you will join the UK Impact Structuring Team in charge of structuring sustainable finance solutions and ESG Advisory services for the benefit of the bank’s issuers and investors clients. This team works in cooperation with the global ENV team, coverage and business lines of GLBA and deploys its ESG expertise to design tailor made products (principally bonds and loans) and services fitting the clients’ market access optimization and sustainable development agenda. You will be reporting to Laurence Alexandre who is in charge of the UK Impact Structuring desk and will be working in close collaboration with her. You will also be working closely with the various ENV teams in Paris, US and Asia.

Summary of the key purposes of the role

  • Lead pitching and structuration of sustainable finance transactions, working closely with the front office teams.
  • Participate to the UK SHIFT* and related projects within the GLBA perimeter
  • Close alignment with the UK coverage and front office teams with client responsibilities to develop and implement strategies to advance and execute Sustainable Finance pitches / mandates and ESG advisory services

Summary of responsibilities

1) Pitching

  • Writing the ESG structuration part of pitches, in coordination with coverage and business lines
  • Participating and/or leading pitching (on the ESG part)
  • Helping to identify ESG financing opportunities or ESG client engagement / dialogue opportunities in a pro-active way
  • Participate to ESG advisory pitches

2) Deal structuration & Executing mandates

  • Following successful pitching, executing the sustainable finance mandates (with a focus on loans and bonds); these can be sustainability-linked loans/bonds or green/social loans/bonds; it is expected that the successful candidate will lead the ESG structuration in a pro-active manner.

3) Developing our ESG offer and understanding ESG

  • Being involved in the UK SHIFT* and contributing to identifying client engagement / dialogue opportunities
  • Developing, hand in hand with the coverage and client facing BL’s, the offer of sustainable products for borrowers and investors, bringing expertise and the understanding of market practices and sustainable financing techniques.
  • Share information on sustainability (incl. UK-specific) within ENV and as appropriate with GLBA UK teams.

* the UK SHIFT is built upon the GLBA SHIFT project which is a GLBA-wide exercised focused on creating synergies between teams and working groups on certain topics pertaining to sustainability and certain sectors that are key to the transition.

4) Interacting with ESG consultants and contribute to building SG London Branch’s profile within the UK on ESG topics.

5) Coordinating internal and external initiatives in the UK and represent the bank in initiatives linked with ESG topics

6) Training

  • As required, contribute to training teams in GLBA on sustainable finance in a pedagogical way
  • Provide adhoc training material / updates material on important ESG topics (UK-related or global), both to UK GLBA and ENV.

Profile required

Competencies 

The ideal candidate is expected to work both in a reactive way (i.e. addressing the queries of the business lines and coverage as they come) and a pro-active way (i.e. identifying opportunities to work with clients and proposing these to the business). A collaborative mindset is absolutely essential for this position, as well as outstanding communication skills. Prior knowledge of sustainability and ESG are a strong plus; the candidate must be keen to learn and grow their expertise on ESG subjects. The role is both internal-facing and client-facing and ability to juggle multiple workstreams is required. Furthermore, the ideal candidate would be able to go both into details (incl. technical discussions on climate change and other sustainability topics) and understand the big picture; for each client, they would be able to understand how our sustainable finance offer fits within the global client relation (collaborating closely with coverage).

Experience of working as a front officer, preferably in structured finance business lines, and/or experience of working on hard-to-abate sectors (O&G, mining, utilities, shipping, air transport, etc) are strong pluses. Candidates who do not have prior front office exposure are still encouraged to apply and it is expected that during the interview, they will be asked how they intend to adapt to a fast-paced business / commercial environment.

Prior exposure to sustainable finance will be a strong plus. Candidates who are not familiar with sustainable finance are expected to document themselves on sustainability-linked loans/bond structures and green/social loans/bonds structures prior to the interview.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or above in sustainable finance, finance, sustainability engineering, etc. Additional ESG-related qualifications would be a strong plus.
