Societe Generale in Russia
Societe Generale has a long history in Russia. At the end of the 19th century, Societe Generale held a 15% stake in the banking syndicate that issued the famous Russian state bonds in France. In the early part of the 20th century, Societe Generale was highly active in the Russian empire through the Russo-Asian Bank, which was at one time the biggest bank in the empire. The Russo-Asian Bank played a strong role in developing economic relations between Asia and Europe. Not only was it involved in banking, it also provided trade financing and capital investment.
These strong ties with Russia were renewed in the 1970s, when Societe Generale opened a representative office in Moscow, and then later in the 1990s and early 2000s, when Societe Generale made an initial investment in Rosbank. Today Societe Generale is the majority shareholder of Rosbank.
