Making a difference to our community

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a key part of the staff culture at Societe Generale (SG). The CSR team organise fundraising and volunteering events for staff in all offices across the UK, plus give employees support to organise their own events - there are over 60 CSR Champions from different teams and departments across the bank who help to promote all of SG's volunteering and fundraising events and encourage their teams to get involved.

Take a look at all the events that SG employees have been involved in:

FUNDRAISING AND CHARITABLE GIVING

SG is proud to support Alzheimer's Society as its Charity of the Year partner, with a target of £750,000 to reach over the two year partnership. SG employees have walked, run, cycled, played sports, baked, swum, sung and much more to raise funds for the charity. With the partnership ending in March 2015, we have already raised £820,000 so far, smashing our target, in support of our 'Care for Today, cure for Tomorrow' campaign."

On the 6th September, 32 SG employees ascended Mt Snowdon at night, reaching the summit at sunrise. Each participant fundraised to take part, raising over £32,000 for our Charity of the Year, Alzheimer's Society. The event was a huge success as summarised by Laurent Issaurat, one of the participants, "'New bonds with exceptional SG People, stunning landscapes, great purpose and much more than that. A truly amazing and unforgettable experience!".

Stephanie joined SG as an intern in the Legal team for an 8 week summer internship through a CSR initiative with charity, The Brokerage Citylink. "All the students undertook a CSR Project and fundraising event. With support from the CSR team to help us integrate well in our teams and succeed, we were encouraged to think innovatively, professionally and truly work as a team. After my internship I stayed in touch with SG whilst studying Law and French Language (LLB Hons) at the University of Kent, and now I am an official SG employee. CSR have been very active and creative in organising events especially for junior employees and next month I will be attending a Junior Talent Team Challenge, which is a volunteering day for junior employees at a local community centre. The CSR Programme has certainly benefited me at SG and added excitement to my role."

VOLUNTEERING

Did you know that all SG employees are entitled to 24 hours per year paid volunteering time? You can use this time to support your own charities, or get involved with the many CSR organised events. From one off workshops, to on-going mentoring and school programmes, there is something for everyone. It's also the perfect way to develop your skills, network and raise your profile in the company. Through its work in the community, SG aims to raise educational aspirations, increase employability and build stronger communities in our local area.

Above is a photo of the popular volunteering activity 'Enabling Enterprise', which is a workshop taking place across SG offices. This 4 hour volunteering session involves SG volunteers working with primary school children on an entrepreneurial enterprise challenge to encourage teamwork and develop student's communication skills. Every SG employee is entitled to 24 hours per year to volunteer, which is a fantastic way to build internal networks across the bank and develop professional skills.

SG employee Miles Roper gave over 120 hours to build a new website for Access All Areas, a small theatre company for people with learning disabilities, based in Hackney. Using his paid volunteering time (24 hours per year) plus many more hours in his own time, Miles transformed their website and is already on to the next one…..

ENVIRONMENT

The UK contributes to the Group's objective of reducing the Group's environmental impact across the five key streams of energy, water, business travel, waste and paper via the UK Group Carbon Panel.

Societe Generale has proactively sought to minimise its CO2 emissions, resulting in a 5% reduction per employee at Group level since 2007. In 2011, we implemented an innovative internal Carbon tax, the funds of which are now used to finance in house environmental efficiency projects.

  • In 2013, 2,574 tons of global CO2 was reduced by 28 environmental efficiency projects projects.
  • In 2013 we donated more than £1 million
  • Spent over 8,500 hours volunteering
  • Involved more than 30% of UK employees
  • Sent 42% less waste to landfill from our two offices

Laura-Jayne Pinner studied International Business, Finance and Economics BSc at the University of Manchester and then did a Graduate Diploma in law (GDL)at the University of Law before working at Societe Generale. Since joining, she has been very active in our CSR programmes… "I was initially involved with CSR on a group volunteering day in Hackey building benches and clearing areas to improve the grounds of Hackney Marshes. Since then I have participated on a Graduate Trainee day also in Hackney clearing overgrown trees in graveyards; volunteered on a weekly basis at a local primary school listening to children read and also arranged a CSR event for SG visitors from Bangalore which involved painting a recreational area in a local leisure centre. There are various programs available for Trainees, Graduates, VIEs etc, where managers encourage you to participate to facilitate bonding with others who are on a similar program to yourself. It is a great opportunity to learn from each other and share your experiences, as well as making friends for the rest of your career at SG. This has expanded my network of SG employees. I have come into contact with people who I have previously met on CSR events and even recently joined a new team with 2 people who were on the Trainee CSR day that I attended. It allows you to learn about other departments and how they work together. With a company focus on CSR, it is important to be interested in volunteering and SG has created a community with a mutual interest in giving something back to the local environment, which is great to be a part of".
