Responsibilities

As a Legal Trainee with the Singapore Branch, you will:

  • Work closely with members of the Singapore Legal Team to provide transactional support to investment business lines and (ii) legal advice to internal management stakeholders on a wide range of matters concerning the activities of Societe Generale in Singapore and South East Asia.
  • Assist the Singapore Head of Legal in discharging the Singapore Legal Department’s regulatory watch responsibilities by: (i) identifying new laws and regulations and changes to existing laws and regulations that may impact on the SG Group in Singapore and South East Asia; and (ii) providing commentary and analysis on these changes for publication through the Bank's Legal Watch tool (ARGOS).
  • Be involved in drafting, reviewing, analyzing and commenting on a wide range of documentation arising out of the team’s transactional and internal operational responsibilities; drafting written advice and other communications with internal and external stakeholders and updating and maintaining internal templates, guidelines and procedures.
  • Carrying out legal research and producing legal memos to assist colleagues within Legal to respond to queries from front office and other key internal stakeholders. 
    The candidate will gain experience and knowledge of debt financing documentation, transaction management and the Bank's legal and regulatory obligations and will work in close collaboration with both lawyers and internal clients.

Summary of responsibilities

  • Provide analysis and commentary on changes in law and regulation and their impact on the Bank.
  • Review, comment on and draft transaction documentation prepared or reviewed by the Singapore Legal Team including NDAs, Letters of Support, Reliance Letters, Commitment Letters and Loan Agreements. 
  • Attend meetings and take minutes.
  • Carry out legal research.
  • Carry out general drafting tasks and proofreading.
  • From time to time, to assist with other matters lawyers in the team may require which may include general administrative tasks.

The candidate will receive training to enable them to do this, but after a couple of month the candidate will be expected to run files on their own, albeit supervised by lawyers within the team.

Level of Autonomy

Whilst, after a couple of month the candidate will be expected to run files on their own, they will be supervised by a senior lawyer.

In order to apply for the Trainee position please ensure you have completed your qualification and will be available to work full time for the duration of the Trainee contract.

Profile required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law

  • Preferably, called to the Singapore Bar or other reputable Common Law jurisdiction.

  • Good knowledge and understanding of Singapore laws

  • Working experience is a merit, but not mandatory

Department Description

The Legal Department in Singapore (SEGL/JUR Singapore) primarily provides legal advice and support to Singapore and Hong Kong based investment banking business lines and all other activities forming part of the SG Group in Singapore and South East Asia.
