TRAINEE: Legal
Responsibilities
1st year:
- Providing legal advice and support to SG’s Global Banking and Advisory (GLBA) as well as Global Transaction & Payment Services (GTPS) teams and other departments of the bank in the Asia-Pacific region, including the transaction management of matters in relation to financing related activities (including lending and asset backed products); and other supplemental legal documentation entered into under or in connection with the above.
- Developing a good understanding of the Legal Department and the internal client we serve (GLBA & GTPS), their activities across HK / the region.
- Relationship building within the Legal Department and other stakeholders within the Bank.
- Reporting and escalating appropriate matters on an ongoing and regular basis to line managers and liaising with other members of the legal department as necessary.
- Compliance with internal guidelines and procedures, and providing assistance in updating guidelines, templates and procedures which relate to the above activities.
2nd year:
- Enhancing and developing a deeper knowledge on the BAU activities
- Being able to come up with more comprehensive solutions or to enhance existing processes
- Being able to work more independently and proactively
- Liaising with external counsel and external bodies including regulators, industry associations, agents and other authorities with respect to the above.
- Keeping up to date with legal and regulatory developments in the finance space.
It is an opportunity for a Junior Lawyer to be trained be exposed to finance activities in a dynamic environment. The candidate will gain hands-on experience with drafting legal documentation in relation to financing related activities (including lending and asset backed products) and exposure to contract law. The candidate will gain a solid understanding of the investment banking setup and acquire valuable interpersonal soft skills
Candidates with outstanding performance will be considered for early conversion to permanent roles.

The Trainee role is a full time 24-month contract with Societe Generale where you will have access to a diverse range of training materials to help you succeed, covering various aspects of businesses, including but not limited to technical skills, leadership development, communication skills, client service and relationship management. To be eligible, please ensure you have completed your qualification and will be available to work full time for the duration of Trainee contract.
Profile required
- Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in law (Hong Kong or Commonwealth qualification)
- Graduates with some working experience gained from other sectors are also welcomed
- Have good communication skills
- Experience with capital markets and/or lending activities an advantage
- Problem solving and analytical skills; attention to detail.
- Motivated and able to work independently, while respecting reporting procedures.
- Excellent command of spoken and written English and fluency in Chinese (Traditional or Simplified) is an advantage
- Possesses basic post-graduate knowledge of fundamental legal principles within area of coverage
- Drafts core legal documents/memos/emails succinctly, thoroughly and in plain language
- Responds effectively to routine legal questions or issues raised by business partners or management
- Identifies and analyses core legal issues within area of coverage
- Identifies legal risks associated with a file
- Stays on top of regulatory changes and case law
- Research points effectively

The Legal Department is responsible for reviewing and approving transactions and advise various business lines on legal and regulatory issues. The Asia-Pacific Legal division has a local presence in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Australia, Taiwan and Singapore.
